June Wrap-Up

Total Reads: 20
Average Rating: 3.35 out of 5 stars
Books 78 through 86 were read during Tome Topple.

75. The Conspiracy of Us by Maggie Hall
17134589It was about a secret society, an ancient prophecy and an Alexander the Great tomb treasure hunt. The book reminded me of the movie National Treasure at times.Firstly, I was sold just on the Alexander the Great part, but the story was fast paced and well done. There is romance in this, but it isn’t overpowering even though it is important to the story. There was the hunt as to who the one in the prophecy is and the reveal didn’t seem too out there. It left me aching for the sequel.

77. Girls in Pants by Ann Brashares
364640I continued on my reread of the Sisterhood in the Traveling Pants books and this one I seem to remember the least about, but I really enjoyed it still.

78. Night Film by Marisha Pessl
18770398I feel like this could have been quite a bit shorter and found myself not loving the ending. I wish it had more of the mixed media parts because it made the book feel so alive.
Rating: 4/5 stars

79. Splintered by A.G. Howard
12558285After an interesting opening line, I was hoping I was going to love this, but I just found myself just feeling meh towards it.I didn’t particularly care for the love triangle and it gives off that since there are more books whom she ends up with probably will change at some point. I haven’t decided if I’m going to continue on with this trilogy, but maybe.

80. Map of Fates by Maggie Hall
24481697This is the sequel to Conspiracy of Us, the first book I read this month. It was easily a five star sequel and those aren’t as common as you’d think. As it is a sequel I won’t say much, but I stayed up late to finish it and this book left me a ball of feelings.

81. Blue Bloods by Melissa de la Cruz
872333I liked the take on vampires splashed with historical references. I also liked how it gave me a Gossip Girl vibe. However, it was just okay and for how many books there are, I probably will not continue on.

82. Cress by Marissa Meyer
13206828I finally made it through the third book in this series and I’m glad I did. I was correct when I assumed I’d like it more than Cinder; however, it was not a lot more, but still enjoyable.

83. It’s a Wonderful Death by Sarah J. Schmitt
20697586Queen bee RJ is accidentally killed instead of the Grimm Reaper’s intended target. She intends to have this mistake fixed and get her life back. Although RJ was snarky and the ending good, I felt overall let down by this book.
Rating: 3/5 stars

84. City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare
6752378It had some big shoes to fill after the conclusion in City of Glass and, while it did a good job, I didn’t love it because of those shoes. Maybe on a reread I’ll love this more, but I understand why it is a lot of people’s least favorites in this series.

86. With Malice by Eileen Cook
26153925Unlikely premise, but had the ability to keep me guessing. i enjoyed the interviews and blog posts added in. the ending, while slightly predictable, was done very well.
Rating: 3/5 stars
Read: June 14-15, 2016

87. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
4671I remember reading this for a required reading and not caring for it. As a part of my read a classic every month decision, I figured it was time to reread this. I was pleasantly surprised that my views on the book have changed and I enjoy it more now. I’m curious if on another reread I’ll end up enjoying it even more.
Rating: 4/5 stars

88. Firstlife by Gena Showalter
25785357With how many holds my library had for this, I was hopeful;  however the reasoning behind the basis of the story was never made clear. I felt the romance part was unnecessary to the story and it’d probably be better without it.
Rating: 3/5 stars

89. Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson
20821284Memoirs are tough to rate on their own and, while I feel like this was important, maybe the format chosen wasn’t the best for it.
Rating: 3/5 stars

90. The Heir by Kiera Cass
22918050I didn’t dislike this much as I thought I would based on others opinions. I don’t think Eadlyn is completely bratty, but rather guarded and slightly bratty which makes me wonder how Maxon would have been about his Selection if he wasn’t aware it had to happen. Eadlyn isn’t aware of much of what occurred during the first three books which is refreshing because it allows the book to focus on her. I have a solid guess as to whom she’d ends up with if she does actually pick someone.

91. City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare
8755776Better than the previous book, but I’m holding hope for the conclusion to be better than both of them. Also, I like Simon more as time goes on. However, I feel like this book would potentially have been rated higher if it hadn’t been for the unintentional spoiling that occurred prior to my reading it.
Rating: 3/5 stars

92. Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness by Susannah Chalan
13547180Although memoirs are hard to rate, I was really fascinated by this. Some parts seemed oddly paced. I feel like this book was best told as an autobiography even if the author didn’t remember everything that happened to her.
Rating: 4/5 stars

93. The Girls by Emma Cline
26893819This book is centered around the Manson cult and Evie who joins them. The best way to describe this book is through this quote from the Goodreads page: “as her obsession with Suzanne intensifies, Evie does not realize she is coming closer and closer to unthinkable violence and to that moment in a girl’s life when everything can go horribly wrong.”Unfortunately, I was disappointed by this one. I did write a spoiler-free review on this one as well.

94. Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard
162085I honestly picked this one up on a whim and got exactly what I wanted out of it. It wasn’t anything spectacular, but enjoyable while I was reading it.
Rating: 3/5 stars
