August Wrap-Up

Total Reads: 21 books
Average Rating: 3.81 out of 5 stars
Books 152 through 154 were read during Bout of Books 17.

135. Everybody Sees the Ants by A.S. King
13528333This is a case of “it’s not you it’s me” because I really seem to struggle with magical realism. I’m glad I read my first A.S. King novel and I’m hoping that next time we may click better.

136. The Crown by Kiera Cass
26074181Somehow, I managed to guess who she ends up with. After all the negative things I  had heard about the duology, I was expecting to dislike them a lot; however, I ended up liking the duology more than the original trilogy. I did find it quite fascinating that the love triangle part of the first three books was never addressed in these despite it being one of the main focuses.

137. This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab
23299512I took my slow sweet time with this and now I just want to binge read all of Victoria Schwab’s books since I’m so sad that I have to wait for the sequel.
Rating: 5/5 stars
Read: July 18-August 4, 2016

138. Theft of Swords by Michael J. Sullivan
10790290The premise of this book is that a skilled thief and his mercenary partner are pinned for the murder of the king and conspiracies occur. There were some info-dumping issues and I did wish it wasn’t entirely third person, but that’s being picky. Despite it’s length, I was still really enjoyed this book. It was very interesting to see the first two books bound together even though they flowed nicely.  I’m interested in what else this author, and story, has to offer.
Rating: 4/5 stars

139. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
22628 It has been over three years since I last read this book and for some reason I was just feeling a reread of it. I was slightly worried that, since it had been over three years, that I would somehow love it less, but my love for it didn’t falter and for that I am grateful. I did write a review on this one.

140. Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard
23174274The first ten or so percent felt like it should have been in the end of the first book. It was strange that Mare seemed to mourn her false silver persona rather than the people who died at the end of the first book for her false persona. I do feel like this book suffered from second book slump and that perhaps the third book will bring back that spark(haha) that I loved from the first book.

141. The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan
7736182I feel like this was an improvement from the Percy Jackson series, but I’ve realized I’m not in a huge rush to get through them anymore so it may take some time to get to book two.
Rating: 4/5 stars
Read: August 6-7, 2016

142. The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros
139253It’s hard to explain why I feel the way I do about this; it just feels like a 3, but it mostly feels like the formatting pulled me from the story.
Rating: 3/5 stars
Read: August 7-8, 2016

143. Stolen: a Letter to my Captor by Lucy Christopher
6408862Firstly, I’m kind of disgusted/disappointed that this is the romance tag on Goodreads. Secondly, although this isn’t the worst kidnapping story I’ve read, this seemed completely unrealistic from the kidnapping up until the rescue. Thirdly, the formatting choice of being one giant letter was odd. I really was hoping to like this one.

144. Pandemic: Tracking Contagions, from Cholera to Ebola and Beyond by Sonia Shah
23847947 Absolutely fascinating and frightening, but the major fault in this is it’s organization. Some parts could have been elaborated on more; maybe focusing on one less disease would have helped.
Rating: 3/5 stars
Read: August 5-10, 2016

145. The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick
9673436A super quick read. I think having seen the film that was discussed in this made me enjoy it more than I would have otherwise.

146. Burial Rites by Hannah Kent
17333319I still don’t have proper words to describe how I felt about this book besides haunted.
Rating: 5/5 stars

147. I Could Pee on This and Other Poems by Cats by Francesco Marciuliano
16062216I deeply enjoyed this book of cat themed poems.

148. Vial Things by Leah Clifford
30814960This was an interesting take on resurrectionists. The execution of this made it feel like a fast paced thriller which I was totally for, although some twists I did see coming.
Rating: 4/5 stars

149. How It Ends by Catherine Lo
22608764I feel like this tried too hard; I wrote a spoiler free review on it.
Rating: 3/5 stars
Read: August 13-17, 2016

150. The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien
727798This book reaffirmed that Sam Gamgee is the love of my life.
Rating: 5/5 stars

151. Down with the Shine by Kate Karyus Quinn25647300I felt that this book slowly lost the darkness I was hoping to expect throughout it.
Rating: 3/5 stars
Read: August 16-19, 2016

152. You Will Know Me by Megan Abbott
25251757I felt like I was going to like this Megan Abbott book the most out of all of them. I really liked the gymnast aspect of this book, but I figured out what was happening before the big reveal and that’s always disappointing.
Rating: 3/5 stars
Read: August 20-23, 2016

153. Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire
25526296Excellent diverse characters and such an excellent story despite it’s short length.
Rating: 5/5 stars.

154. A Week of Mondays by Jessica Brody
28958920I liked this take on the concept of getting a do-over; however, it took awhile to get into it. I feel like less than a week would have been better for this book because it was slightly repetitive, obviously.
Rating: 3/5 stars

155. Wolf in White Van by John Darnielle
20575425This book took some time to get into the writing style of this book which is why I took a star off, but overall I really liked how the writing style went because it let the ending be what it was, if that makes any sense.
Rating: 4/5 stars
Read: August 28-31, 2016

Not too bad of a reading month for being sick for a week of it.
